The story, backdrop and setting (Screen
play) the premise is a definite lift
from 12B (Tamil)/Sliding doors (English) with a screenplay mix of Soodhu Kavum
& Moodar koodam & the climax once again inspired from the English film
Graduate and Kamal’s Raja Paarvai. The director’s has, it appears, stated that
he was inspired by the film “Run Lola Run”. In my opinion this film is a farfetched
inspiration of R.L.R! It is about the
hero (Arulnithi), his friend & the heroine’s friend (Bindhu Madhavi)
planning to kidnap the heroine, Isabella, who is forced to marry a boy of her father/grandfather’s
choice at a church. The story is divided into 3 parts. The premise of the story
open in the heavenly abode with Shiva & Brahma answering Naradha’s query
regarding destiny and fate of human beings. Lord Shiva explains the concept
showcasing the life of one such affected soul ‘Arulnithi’ and his tryst with
fate & destiny. Part 1 starts at
a particular time. This part opens with the Arulnithi & Bindhu planning the
kidnap and soon joined by Bagvathy Perumal (Bugs/N.K.P.K) and Karthik Sabesh
who form the foursome to execute the kidnap plan. Nassar is the comic villain
of the piece and promises the hero 30 lakhs if he manages to successfully
kidnap Isabella (Ashritha Shetty). Karthik Sabesh accidentally fires the gun
and brings down the ceiling fan rendering him unconscious. Karthik Sabesh
hereon becomes the silent quotient for the rest of the film. Now the hero and
his two friends (threesome) on a bike decide to execute the kidnap plan. What
follows is the best part of this film. It is filled with humorous real life anecdotes
one after another, some of which brings a smile while others make you laugh.
Finally the threesome reach the church in a bid to kidnap Isabella and the
final outcome of their efforts forms the climax. Part 2 Starts a few minutes later the premise is a carbon copy of
part 1 except for the real life situations. Characters and incidents have
subtle changes to correlate the time factor and the story. Now comes Part 3 this starts a few minutes later
than the other 2 parts and this one is the Xerox copy of the other 2 parts and
based on the same premise with the director once again effected more changes to
the incidents, players & characters in the final of this three part
screenplay.
& the Climax all 3 parts as you may have realized
by now have different climax. The first one was more entertaining than the
second one but the third one, very tiresome!
Acting: - Arulnithi as Tamizh I have a strong feeling that Arulnidhi somehow likes to be
referred to by ‘native’ names! Here is a guy who acts reasonably well and is
endowed with a decent build and height which he should capitalize on! But
somehow chooses scripts (powered by his in-house production house) which are
either masala or highly nondescript and diluted. In other words a script
centered on a sport or a police officer or even better a suave play boy would
serve him well for the future. In this film he has very little or no role to
showcase any of his plus points.
Bindu Madhavi is totally wasted by the director. She neither
serves as the glamour quotient nor has she been used for her acting prowess. In
fact in my opinion this character was totally unnecessary for this film. Such acts
only add up to the budget and nothing more!
Ashritha Shetty as Isabella
here is another example of wasted talent. Why Ashritha? She had shown
shades of good acting in the film ‘Soodhu Kavum”.
Bagavathi Perumal, this
actor should go places in Tamil cinema. He is a versatile actor and his eyes
are a big asset. He underplays his role and his voice modulation is excellent.
He is the biggest plus for this film. In fact he will soon give Santhanam and
the others a run for their money! (If he lands a plum role)
Karthik Sabesh is
the sleeping quotient in this film as was Isabella, the nonexistent (Manasakshi)
quotient in Soodhu Kavum.
Aadukalam Naren as the encounter inspector is another plus to
this film.
Aruldas as the flying squad inspector is a revelation. He
fits the role to the tee!
Paandu also ran!
Nassar as Hippy Lahri I
have repeatedly stated that these days this veteran and greatly talented actor
is repeatedly being used as an object of ridicule. Somehow pains me to see him being
misused this way!
M.S. Bhakar a passerby cracks a joke on polygamy (I wonder
whom he was referring to though) and nothing more.
Jayaprakash as the doctor is adequate but anyone could have essayed
this role.
Manobala as the Malayalee tea shop owner is adequate but his dialogue
delivery gives him away as an imitation.
Delhi Ganesh as the Brahmin neighbor is adequate and has done
‘hazaar’ such roles and once again walks through this one.
V.S.Raghavan as the father in law to be mouths exactly 21
lines of dialogues more as a guest appearance.
Ravi Raghavendra as the father in law also ran.
Camera: - The D.O.P has done a fairly
decent job with the camera and lighting. Was pretty good during the crowd
scenes in the theatre and inside the church. The bike ride sequences were
pretty neat and acceptable.
Music: - Why???
Art: - Adequate. On the whole nothing
unusual except for the retro feel to the Brahma/Shiva/Nardha scenes.
Choreo: - Mostly montage sequences and nothing
more.
Stunts: - Thrust and out of place!
Edit: - The
ones that are Okay: - 1. Once again an interesting premise 2. Bagavathi Perumal
3. Most of the characters normally referred as the ‘rest’ in my reviews 4. The
Series of sequences just before the bike ride the one with Delhi Ganesh,
Paandu, and the rest and the ones during the bike ride which were the best, the
tryst of the threesome with the inspector (Aadukalam Naren) at the tea shop and
Diesel, the scene when they are stopped by the flying squad cop (Aruldas). 5. The
bike running on PVC bottle filled with petrol 6. A few sequences inside the
church 7. The hiccup scene (Bagavathi Perumal)
The one’s that are
MoKai: - 1) the irksome second part repeat of the premise and even more tiresome
repeat of third part. 2) Wasted main
leads (anyone could have performed these characters) 3) Why 3 parts of the same
premise 4) Songs were basically unnecessary fillers and were a lag and BG
rather misplaced and repetitive most often times. 4) Brahma/Shiva/Nerada
introduction and interludes served no useful purpose 5) some of the characters
to showcase time was irksome and avoidable 6) the purpose of ant scene was
quite perplexing 7) the fight scene to showcase Arunlnithi as an action hero?
Wow! Plain stupid!
Finally to sum it all
up, a quote: "The culture of independent film criticism has totally gone
down the drain and this seems to come with the territory of the consumer age
that we are now living in." - Wim Wenders
Left right & Centre:
- 5-6 Students and working professionals: - Okay….Watchable but to be frank we
think the repeat of the same story 3 times was boring and made the film slow. Centre (Man & Woman):- We quite liked the
film and my friend on my right: - For god’s sake why do our directors spoil a good
idea by overdoing it!
Bottom Line: - What’s all the fuss about the “Kanni” (Virgin) when the film is a lift
from so many “USED” and “REUSED” story lines!
12B + Sliding Doors + Soodhu
Kavum +MoodarKoodam + Raja Paarvai +Graduate & Run Lola Run – Definitely
not “VIRGIN” by a long shot!
Until next time,
