SAIVAM - “Bakh” “Bakh”, for Vegetarians and PETA activists!

SAIVAM - “Bakh” “Bakh” - for Vegetarians and PETA activists!

Cast: - Nasser as Kathiresan, Kausal as Vishalakshi, Ravi as Balamurugan, Rajalakshmi as Dhanalakshmi, Kalyani as Meenakshi, Suresh as Meiyappan, Lakshmanan Ganesh as Ganesh, Vidhya as Thenmozhi, Shakthi as Kumaran, Suchitra as Usha, Sara Arjun as Tamil Selvi, Baasha as Senthil, Twara Desai as Abhirami, Ray Paul as Saravanan, George as Raja, Malathi as Kala, Vittal as Ramanathan, Savithri as Kamatchi among others

& Crew: - A.L.Vijay, Produced by – A.L.Alagappan, D.O.P – Nirav Shah, Music- G.V.Prakash Kumar, Edit – Anthony, Distributed by – Red Giant Movies.

The story, backdrop and setting (Screen play)

An Intro: - I am deliberately avoiding writing the premise of this film as my review should by itself serve as a premise of sorts.

This genre of film making is a critic`s nightmare. Saivam really leaves a very uncertain feeling at the end of the film. After watching the film you really want to compliment the director for choosing an offbeat and seldom touched subject Vegetarianism stemming out of animal cruelty but alas as a viewer and a critic you are simply constrained and restrained as Saivam sadly falls short. 1. The director appears undecided on the depths he can go to highlight the issues he has taken up and 2. He is not able to clearly balance the two main issues he has taken up. And finally the director ends up making a docudrama which may go well with activists of both causes but may simply not entertain today’s discerning  viewer. Critics will praise this film as an offbeat and original idea and the film may end up bagging a few awards too but in my opinion the director fails in his attempts to showcase the cause and instead ended up focusing on the emotional bond between the two protagonists Nasser and the granddaughter thereby even the lost and found rooster which was placed in the film with a clear purpose is relegated to the background. Nasser and the entire family finally change to vegetarianism only because of their love for the little girl (the sweet little thing) rather than the issue at hand - the ritual of animal sacrifice and the cruelty meted out to the animal. Let me now highlight some of my thoughts which may have worked better for this film:-
The first half opens with Kathireasan’s (Nasser) wife achi (Vishalakshi) and servant Kala shopping at the local “Sandhai” (Farmer’s Market) for non vegetarian goodies for Nasser.
My opinion: - The presence of the little girl Tamil Selvi (Baby Sara Arjun) at the “Sandhai” and the visualization of the impact of seeing the dead animals, seafood etc however small on her would have served as a good foil for her final characterization.
The director then attempts to characterize Tamil Selvi’s kindness by making her free the animals tied up at home. Great!
My Opinion: - Here again if a scene of Sara aiding or rescuing a few strays like cattle, cat or perhaps a dog would have helped the films cause instead the narration tends to drag beyond permissible viewing limits by the director showing lengthy family reunion scenes which somehow ends giving  most of the first half the feel of watching  a Tamil  TV soap.
The scene now moves on to the family reunion feasting at the traditional family home.
My Opinion: - Here again the Sara should have been shown developing a further distaste towards non vegetarian food especially after her market visit.  (Gautama Buddha’s impact after a visit to the city) The family strongly believes that all their woes stems from their family forgetting to sacrifice a rooster (affectionately named “papa” by the family) to the family deity. What bugged me here was that the village in question strangely has very few people living in it, the village at most times bears a rather desolate and deserted look the streets are mostly empty and their absence is not explained by the director. More often than not people seem to appear and disappear as and when the director requires their presence in a particular scene. Anyways back to the 1st half, each couple Nasser’s sons and daughter in laws have various issues like infertility, job uncertainty etc was very natural and added to the flow of the story though the problems at hand could have had a little more intensity. Nasser in the interest of the family finally decides to sacrifice the rooster. Then to everyone’s horror, the cause of action “PAPA” the rooster goes missing. Here again the relationship of the various characters takes a while to register. Everyone in the family starts a frantic search for the rooster. Here the humor does work a bit for the film. The idea of searching for the rooster starts at the school as the director had earlier conceived a scene based on the nursery rhyme “Mary had a little lamb” in Saivam “Baby Sara has a little black rooster” etc. The repeated usage of “Bakh” “Bakh” after a point becomes rather childish. Here the grand dad Nasser is a very kind hearted disciplinarian who believes in a self evolved tradition that if anyone in the family commits a mistake he or she has to do a few “ Thoppukaranam’s”  a kind of sit ups. Baby Sara is most often the repeated offender. She is kind of impishly naughty at times and at other times takes the blame upon herself for others. Since the grand dad in particular and the family adore her and just cannot hurt her with any kind of punishment, to Sarah “Thoppukaranam” literally becomes some kind of ritual or tool rather than punishment!  The director also adds a bit of romance quotient of adolescent love between Senthil (Nasser’s son Bashaa) and Malathi (mora ponnu) which actually works in this film. The cock fight scene reminds you of “Aadukalam” and the song sung by Baby Sara reminds you of the film “Indira”. The humor initially works while the family begins the search for the rooster in but after a while becomes repetitive and boring. The local Mandaravadhi/Magician using the betel leaf and Mai (soot) is rather long drawn and becomes a drag and nonsensical after a while. The age old Wi-Fi joke may work for some as the rest of the film lacks any kind of credible wit or humor. The boy from Dubai has performed to his potential which does add some spice to an otherwise insipid fare from most others. The English speaking servant Raja is probably the one among the very few who brings a kind of smile to your face and a few laughs. All other artistes other than those mentioned in my review can be likened to stand in TV soap artistes. The rooster being silent most of the time probably suffers from partial laryngitis and crows only when the director though it fit!

Sp Mention:- The English speaking Sara pitted against the city bred boy and the lack of Farming dialogue delivered  by Nasser is worthy of mention.

and the climax: - The forced climax would have been equally effective in the house as soon as the rooster was found! The final scene full of “Thopukaranam” and Nasser’s dramatic act just fell flat and did not have the desired impact as conceived by the director.

Acting: - Nasser as Kathiresan, Good performance from the actor, very subdued and underplayed. Similar to Shivaji’s performance in Kamal’s Deiva Magan. Though I got the feeling that Nasser was trying a tad bit too hard to excel and perform! In fact at times I could see a sense of desperation in his performance in probably trying to make the film work all on his own!

Sara Arjun: - Has essayed a very effective and endearing performance. I wish the director had used more of her talent to essay this film to a much higher level.

Malathi as the servant, Ray Paul as the angry city bred boy, George the servant definitely worth a mention.

D.O.P:- Nirav Shah’s lighting, framing and camera angles works exceedingly well for this premise. The D.O.P has not exceeded the brief and his clarity of thought takes the visualization to its desired climax.

Music: - The B.G score of having a combination of western music in the first half and traditional music in the second half baffled me but probably the MD had some idea in conceiving such a score. Uthara Unnikrishnan’s voice a big plus. It matched Sara Arjun’s age, even though the song took us straight to the film Indira. Gana song looks like a commercial add on.

Edit by Antony is more than adequate. The movie length definitely helps!

Finally to sum it all up, a quote: “Such films will get rave reviews, probably receive awards and accolades but can never be termed as a great film! Few may love it but many will not like it”

Bottom Line: - Cannot say OW! Neither cant say WOW! You simply end up saying AW! Could have been better!

My Rating:- 1.5 for performance 1 for the premise & .25 Devoid of usual Masala Total 2.75/5 with the thought - if only the director had put in more effort!

X - Men: Days of Future Past - Watch it simply for the Special Effects!

X - Men: Days of Future Past - Watch it simply for the Special Effects!

Cast:- Hugh Jackman - Logan/Wolverine, James McAvoy - Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender - Erik Lehnsherr, Jennifer Lawrence - Raven/Mystique, Haile Berry - Storm, Nicholas Hoult - Hank/Beast, Anna Paquin - Rogue, Ellen Page - Kitty Pryde, Shawn Ashmore - Bobby/Iceman, Omar Shy - Bishop, Evan Peters - Peter/Quicksilver, Josh Helman - Maj Bill Stryker, Daniel Cudmore - Colossus, Bingbing Fan - Blink
& Crew:- Director - Stephen Norrington, S.P - Simon Kinberg, Story - Jane Goldman/Simon Kinberg, D.O.P - Newton Thomas Sigel, Edit - Michael Louis Hill/John Ottman, Music- John Ottman & More than over 100 Visual Effects/ Special Effects
Premise:- Sentinels, robots were  created for the purpose of hunting down mutants in 1973. 50 years later the Sentinels would also hunt humans who aid mutants. Charles Xavier asks Kitty Pryde is the only person who can send a person's consciousness into the past but just a few weeks because beyond that it could harm them. Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) volunteers to go back in time (as he is the only one who can self heal) to stop the Sentinels before they are able to adapt and deal with all mutant abilities. Charles explains that Mystique was responsible because when she learned about the idea of Sentinels she sought out Bolivar Trask the creator and kills him in the past. In the process Mystique is captured and her ability to change is studied somehow added to the Sentinels which enables them to adapt. Logan must go back in time meet the younger Charles and seek his help to stop Mystique but the younger Charles is on drugs at that time and forsakes him powers but is able to walk. Logan's mission is also to find Magneto.
Direction, story & Screenplay: - This film is an almost complete example of the usage of special effects and animation technology in todays films. Secondly for those who have grown up reading Marvel comics it simply brings it alive and in 3D right in front of you! and the atmos sound enhances the visuals to unbelievable heights. The one outstanding scene has to be seen to be believed by using motion capture technology the director has fused two time zones and speeds into one scene! Fantastic this scene alone is worth the 120 buck ticket i spent to watch this film. My advice don't bother about the content or masala which may go above the head of those who are not Marvel comic fans nor super hero stuff. Don't worry for once the special effects will take you on a special roller coaster ride which you will enjoy. I am pasting a link on the making of the scene i am particularly fond of in this film <http://www.fxguide.com/featured/future-threat-x-men-days-of-future-past/>
I am also giving you a link of the animation technique used in my film "THOOVAANAM" in the year 2007 <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nqzMK5FdNk> however archaic it may appear today just to highlight the fantastic progress made in the field of special effects and animation. Hope you find it interesting!

Acting:- More Charisma than performance!

D.O.P.:- Good work! But I have seen better work like in the film "The Dark Knight".

Edit:- The transition, effects and cuts done very well indeed! A treat for the students of Viscom.

Stunts: - Standard super hero stuff!

Music:- BG sore blends well with the premise!

TRIVIA:-Two of Peter Maximoff (Quicksilver)'s relations are implied but never outright stated in the film due to copyright issues. He first remarks to Magneto that his mom used to know someone that could manipulate metal - in the comics, Magneto is in fact Quicksilver's father. This is further implied when Peter's Mother sees Magneto on television and reacts with horror and recognition. A deleted scene also addressed that Peter has a sister - Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch.

Including his cameo in X-Men First Class(2011), this will be Hugh Jackman's seventh portrayal of Logan/Wolverine, raising his own record for the most times a comic book character has been played by the same actor in theatrical films. He will also be the only actor to appear in the entire X-Men film series.

According to Peter Dinklage, Bryan Singer picked him to play Boliver Trask because of his height: "With my dwarfism, I'm a bit of a mutant. I can't move metal or anything, but I thought of it as self-loathing. Deep down, Trask is quite sensitive about that aspect of himself."

Halle Berry's role as Storm had to be substantially reduced due to her pregnancy.

A life-size model of a 1973 Sentinel robot was constructed for filming.
Goof ups:-When Magneto levitates RFK Stadium, it seen with a baseball diamond and configuration. In 1973 RFK Stadium was not being used as a baseball venue as the Washington Senators had moved to Texas following the 1971 season.

When they are about to play chess, Charles's King and Queen are on the wrong starting squares.

When they are about to play chess, Charles's King and Queen are on the wrong starting squares.

Finally to sum it all up, a quote:-
Left right & Centre: - It's a treat for Marvel Comic & Super Hero fans. For the rest it is sheer action packed entertainment!

Bottom Line: - We in India simply do not have the budget to make such films; at least for the present! So let's not end up making fun of ourselves  but stick to pure content which we excel in!

My Rating 2.5 Plus 1 for Sp Effects - Total - 3.5/5

Vadacurry - Dedicated to iPhone users for the rest a separate romantic track!

Vadacurry - Dedicated to iPhone users for the rest a separate romantic track!

Cast:- Jai as Satish, Swati Reddy as Naveena, RJBalaji as Karikalan aka Vadacurry, Misha Ghoshal, Aruldoss as the father, Kasthuri as the mother, Sunny Leone/VenkatPrabhu/Premji (Sp App)
& Crew:- S.SP/Dir:- Saravana Rajan, D.D.P.:- Venkatesh P, Music:- Vivek Shiva/Mervin Solomon,Edit:- Praveel K L/N.B.Srikanth
Producer:- Dayanidhi Azhagiri

Direction, story & Screenplay: - This film is a double narrative (i.e.) The entire premise is narrated in a single person boring monologue just before the interval and again visually shown for 2hrs and 10mins that at the end of it all the viewer is left in the doldrums utterly confused and frustrated. Let me start with the premise:- "P" a pharmaceutical company is disposing off expired drugs through "S" a sales rep who in turn funnels it through "B" a broker who in turn palms it off to a "DC" drug cartel headed by "X" an unknown entity. Confused? Look! I am trying to simplify the film's confused double narrative and at the same trying to create some sort of intrigue as an added initiative (which of course is missing in the film) so that you will somehow end up watching this film! Coming to the next part of the directors premise. Where and how does Jai the hero fit into the premise. Jai the protagonist a medical representative is probably the alter ego of the director of this film earning 14K but can only afford a "dubbah" cell phone owing to his abject poverty though he rides a swanky bike! The real hero of the first half is Jai's "dubbah" phone and his friend RJ Balaji aka Vadacurry! The entire first half revolves around instances which mocks the use of mobile phones more particularly the cheap Korean/Chinese phones which have loud ring tones and even louder speaker modules. The director uses RJ Balaji effectively to move the first half but beyond a point the film drags and the weak premise fails to sustain. The rare novelty in this film is a separate romantic visual track with the heroine Swati Reddy (Naveena) instead of the usual separate comedy track in Tamil cinema. Though the romantic track simply fails to entertain or move the story along but the comedy track does to a certain extent . In fact the romance is an absolutely absurd insert by the director which is so ineffective and purposeless to this story. Let me move on! Finally the hero Jai after much deliberation steals the elusive i phone and ends up getting caught in some sort of mistaken identity scenario and ludicrous crossfire between "A","B","DC" & "X" which simply fails to move the premise nor effectively entertain. The director even tries to pep up proceedings by using the late M.G.R's pictures even going to desperate lengths of equating "Puratchi Thalaivar" to god almighty. In fact even trying to compare M.G.R's originality with todays pseudo heroes like Simbudevan etc.The first half starts well but fizzles out with a series of ring tones and insipid romance.
The second half is even more bizarre as Jai the hero is put in a spot by the director and has to singlehandedly combat multifarious issues at the same time like kidnapping, suicide attempts, motor cycle chases, more ring tones, false complaints, boss's wrath and finally to my relief the film ended with the usual Jing, bang and bash sending bodies flying all over the place! The romantic track also comes to its logical end. Thank god there were no end credit footage to prolong the agony any further!
Track list:- 5 Songs. Total duration of songs: - 23.21 mins.
Acting: - Jai as Sathish, It somehow felt that he was trying too hard and ends up imitating Vijay!
Sweta Reddy as Naveena, Was she asleep while the director narrated the script or was she really desperate to bag any role in Kollywood!
RJ Balaji as Vadacurry, Saves the film from collapsing under the weak premise. Somehow i see in RJ Balaji the rise of another Santhanam .
Kasturi as the mother, Somehow fails to fit the part though her performance was adequate.
Aruldoss as the father, I am sure he has hit 25 in these kind of stereo typed roles.
The rest:- Too many that i simply lost count after a while!
Camera:- What can a D.O.P really do in films like this! Very little indeed!
Music: - B.G.rather noisy and out of place most of the time.
Choreo:- Nothing much to write home about!
Stunts:- The usual!
Edit: - Adequate.
The one’s that worked: - RJ Balaji's humor quotient and quips!
The one’s that bombed:-  The weak premise and a badly conceived romantic track.
Finally to sum it all up, a quote: "NEVER STEAL AN IPHONE" - My wife.
Left right & Centre: - 5 walk outs well before the climax! A lot of squirming on my right. A lot of groans and moans heard to my left!
Bottom Line: - “When everything gets answered, it's fake.” ― Sean Penn - This director is yet to come out of his mentor's shadow!
My Rating:- 2.25/5

MUNDASUPATTI - gAGS for Laughs stretched into a 148 minTamil feature film!

MUNDASUPATTI - gAGS for Laughs stretched into a 148 minTamil feature film!

Cast:- Vishnu Vishal, Nandita, Kaali, Venkat, Anand Raj & the residents of Mundasupatti

& Crew:- S/S/D - Ram Kumar, D.O.P. - PV Shankar, Music - Leo John Paul, Art- Gopi Anand
Track list:- You will be well served by listening to the tracks on a CD player or car stereo.

Direction, story & Screenplay: - This film is another classic case of  producers Thirukumaran Entertainment (C.V.Kumar) & Fox Star Studios who seem to think a reasonably good subject used in making a short film has enough content for a 2hr 28 min feature film. The result 1) a boring feature film and 2) a talented young film maker wasted for want of proper guidance. This film is based on one single thread that in the village of Mundasupatti people are bound by a superstition that if any resident of the village is photographed he or she will die! Based on this one notion the director decides to take the viewer most of the time on a slow, boring and dreary 2.1/2 hr drudgery except for a few moments of laughter which would have probably brought only a smile if this film had been a rip roaring comedy. The film starts in the year 1947 and moves on to the 80's. Honestly I really did not understand the significance of the stipulated periods or dates and its connection or relevance to this film. Wearing bell bottoms, having long Beatles like haircut with sideburns and wearing batik/bleeding Madras shirts has nothing to do with the premise of this film. This premise would have worked even if it had been played out now. Vishnu Vishal and his assistant Kaali run a photo studio and the first half is totally devoted in establishing these two characters. The names Mundasupatti and Komanapatti etc is supposed to add to the humor but sadly it doesn't. The trend these days is to focus on village based comedies with out of the box thinking like Pannayarum Padminiyum, Vayai Moodi Pesavum, Varuthapadatha Valibhar Sangam, Sutta Kadai etc while some succeed at the B.O most others fail. Once again its love at first sight as the hero falls for the coy village girl Nandita for the millionth time in Tamil cinema. I have now come to the logical conclusion that the portrayal of this so called love at first sight is more physical rather than emotional as most of the female leads or pretty and/or well endowed! Our heroes never seem to  fall in love with ordinary or bad looking girls! In this film too Nandita is a school kid and the hero "picks" (present day slang) her up! Of course she has a "Mora Paiyan" (suitor) and a strict father and grating nose crying screeching submissive mother and the director also throws in a freebie a "catapult" wielding little brother! All in all a pot boiler village masala film sugar coated with the genre comedy which somehow fails to sweeten even an iota of the viewers sensibilities. Vishnu has a fixed grin or a so called smile which appears more "lech" than anything else! I am sorry but his acting talent remains dormant almost through out. There is this friend and assistant Kaali who tries to pep up proceedings with some serious comedy and barely succeeds in his efforts. The actor who plays 'Muneeshkanth" is the biggest surprise factor in the film. He has fully understood his role and pot rayed it to his fullest abilities. In fact without this humor quotient the movie would have fallen completely flat. The actor who plays the village priest is acceptable. The rest also ran i mean literally!

& the Climax, The director uses the "object" of the premise as a sort of a "freeze" climax which turns out to be so predictable and archaic!

Acting: Vishnu Vishal with his funny hair do and fixed "lech" kind of smile is either riding an old vintage motor bike or digging a well! All in all his acting fails to impress. He looks more like a aimless moron on screen.
Kaali as Vishals assistant is a talented actor. Tries his best to pep up proceedings but the script betrays him.
Nandita has very little to do except use her coy smile get angry a couple of times and as usual with all village based subjects gets slapped by the father for insolence.
MuneeshKanth is really the surprise packet who single handedly tries to keep the film from becoming a total disaster but not everyone can be a marvel comic super hero when disaster strikes!
The village priest is worth a mention!
Anandaraj as the comic villain essays his role quite well!
The rest keep running aimlessly all over the screen!
Camera:- Pretty decent camera work. The lighting suits the period of the premise. The slow panning and up and down tilt shots adds to the slowness of the premise thereby the pace of the film lags at quite a few places.

The rest keep running aimlessly all over the screen!

Camera:- Pretty decent camera work. The lighting suits the period of the premise. The slow panning and up and down tilt shots adds to the slowness of the premise thereby the pace of the film lags at quite a few places.

Music: - Decent but once again the B.G score used more than necessary. I wish our music directors start using the sounds of silence more.
Art : - Acceptable though the area of coverage was small.

Choreo:- Nothing to talk about!

Stunts:- What stunts?

Edit: - Another 30 to 45 mins of cut is an absolutely necessity.
The one’s that worked: - The characterization during the death scene well crafted to showcase the emotions of each player .

The one’s that worked: - The characterization during the death scene were well crafted to showcase the emotions of each player.

The one’s that bombed:- The premise stretched to breaking point! Loosely strung screen play. Meandering and dull story telling.

Finally to sum it all up, a quote:- "A statue has never been erected in honor of a critic! The public is the only critic whose opinion is worth anything at all!

Left right & Centre: - A few occasional laughs but lots of moans and groans.

Bottom Line: - A MOVIE WITHOUT A CAUSE OR PURPOSE RARELY ENTERTAINS!

My Rating:- 1.5 + .5 for Concept Total:- 2/5
